Seamless steel pipes

Seamless steel pipes are hollow, long steel strips made from a single piece of metal with no seams. Due to their integral forming, high strength, and good pressure resistance, they are known as the “blood vessels” of industry.

I. Basic Definition and Classification

Definition: Solid round steel is integrally formed through high-temperature piercing, rolling/cold drawing, without welds, and has a continuous cross-section.

By Process:
Hot-rolled pipe: Outer diameter ±0.5%, wall thickness ±8%, used for large-diameter, thick-walled, general industrial applications.

Cold-rolled/cold-drawn pipe: High precision (outer diameter ±0.05mm), smooth surface, used in precision machinery and hydraulic systems.

Extruded pipe: Suitable for high-alloy, difficult-to-deform materials, used in special working conditions.

By Material: Carbon steel (20#, Q345B), alloy steel (15CrMo, 12CrMoV), stainless steel (304, 316L).

By Specification: Outer diameter 0.3mm–650mm, divided into thick-walled and thin-walled types; labeled as outer diameter × wall thickness (mm). II. Core Features (Comparison with Welded Pipes)

Seamless and High Pressure Bearing: No stress concentration, pressure bearing capacity is 20%–30% higher than welded pipes, suitable for high-pressure applications.

Uniform Mechanical Properties: Consistent metallographic structure, good fatigue and impact resistance, and long service life.

High Dimensional Accuracy: Cold-drawn pipe tolerances can reach ±0.05mm, with a smooth inner wall, suitable for direct use in precision components.

Temperature and Corrosion Resistance: Stable performance at high/low temperatures; alloy and stainless steel materials are suitable for corrosive environments.

Higher Cost: Price is 30%–50% higher than welded pipes, but the overall cost is lower under harsh working conditions.

III. Production Process Overview

Piercing: Round steel is heated to 1200–1250℃ and pierced into hollow tubes using a skew rolling piercing mill.

Rolling/Drawing: Hot-rolled pipes undergo continuous rolling, sizing, and straightening; cold-rolled/cold-drawn pipes undergo multi-pass drawing to reduce diameter and wall thickness.

Heat Treatment: Normalizing, annealing, or quenching and tempering to optimize strength and toughness.

Inspection: Eddy current testing, hydrostatic testing (2.5 times working pressure), laser diameter measurement to ensure quality.

IV. Main Applications
Oil & Gas: Drill pipes, casing, oil and gas pipelines, suitable for deep well high-pressure and corrosive environments.

Power Boilers: Superheaters, reheaters, main steam pipes, withstanding temperatures and pressures exceeding 560℃.

Chemical/Nuclear Power: Heat exchangers, reactors, nuclear power steam generator tubes, high-temperature resistant, corrosion-resistant, and radiation-resistant.

Machinery Manufacturing: Hydraulic cylinders, bearings, drive shafts; high-precision cold-drawn tubes reduce processing steps.

Construction/Military: Steel structure supports, bridges, cannon barrels, gun barrels, relying on high strength and safety.
