Rebar: The “bones and muscles” in construction projects

Rebar, the full name of which is “hot-rolled ribbed steel bar”, is named because of the ribs evenly distributed along the length of its surface. These ribs can enhance the bond between the steel bar and the concrete, allowing the two to form a solid whole and jointly withstand external forces. As an indispensable key material in construction projects, rebar is widely used and important, and it runs through almost every link from infrastructure to high-rise buildings.

In civil and commercial buildings, rebar is like a “skeleton”.

• Foundation and beams: The foundation, load-bearing columns, beams and other core structures of the house require rebar to build a steel skeleton and then pour concrete. For example, the shear walls and frame columns of high-rise residential buildings must rely on the high strength of rebar to resist the weight of the building itself and external loads to prevent structural deformation or collapse.

• Floor and wall: The steel mesh in the floor and the structural columns in the wall are also made of rebar. It can disperse the pressure on the floor, reduce the occurrence of cracks, and enhance the integrity and earthquake resistance of the wall.

Infrastructure construction

• Bridge engineering: Whether it is a highway bridge, railway bridge or overpass, rebar is widely used in key parts such as bridge piers, bridge decks, and load-bearing beams. When subjected to repeated effects of vehicle rolling, deadweight and natural environment (such as wind and temperature changes), rebar provides sufficient tensile and compressive resistance for bridges, ensuring the stability and service life of bridges.

• Road and rail transportation: In the roadbed reinforcement of highways and the supporting structure of subway tracks, rebar is often used to make reinforced concrete components to enhance the bearing capacity of roads and tracks to cope with frequent traffic loads.

• Water conservancy projects: Water conservancy facilities such as reservoir dams, water diversion channels, and culverts are subjected to long-term impact and water pressure. The steel skeleton made of rebar can significantly improve the crack resistance and durability of concrete structures, ensuring the safe operation of water conservancy projects.

Industry and special engineering

Rebar also plays an important role in industrial plants, warehouses, and large equipment foundations. For example, the equipment foundation of a heavy machinery plant needs to withstand the huge weight of the equipment and the vibration during operation. The combination of rebar and concrete can provide strong structural strength to avoid foundation settlement or damage. In addition, in some special projects such as nuclear power plants and port terminals, rebar needs to meet higher strength and corrosion resistance requirements to adapt to the challenges of special environments.

In short, rebar, with its excellent mechanical properties and good synergy with concrete, has become the “bones” to ensure structural safety in modern construction projects, supporting all kinds of buildings from design drawings to reality.
